Honestly, I couldn’t tell if he was kidding or not, but given Pheonix’s reputation for being quite the intense sort of guy, I wouldn’t doubt it for a second. Especially if I was interviewing him on the red carpet. I’d say it’s a loss to the acting world if he really decided to retire, but I’m sure he’ll find a footing in music and do his thing there, or just give it up and come back to acting someday. You know, like Don Johnson.
According to MySpace, a recent study by Nielsen shows that the popular social networking site has risen above sites like Yahoo!, Google and AOL for 15-24 olds to become the top source of movie information, based on a recent survey of activity for The Dark Knight.
That’s right. One study based on the findings surrounding the biggest film of the summer and MySpace says “we’re number one!”. Never mind sites like IMDb or even Wikipedia that people might use to look up and reference information about movies. Thanks MySpace, maybe it’s because I’m not in the 15-24 age group, but I don’t really think I’ll be looking to you for movie information.
Just like Redbox did a couple of weeks ago, Houston-based TNR Entertainment Corp. have acquired legal counsel to take on Universal Studios’ new policy on kiosk-based DVD rental services. Operating kiosks under the names The New Release and MovieCube, TNR is preparing to address the same changes to Universal’s policy starting December 1st that would require a 45-day delay for new releases and number of items allowed in each kiosk among other ridiculous demands.
This after a week when the only two major new releases, The Incredible Hulk and The Strangers, were both from Universal and probably saw a fair amount of rental business. I picked up both of them over the weekend, but would Universal rather I have not rented those? Because if it were any other week with more appealing titles available and/or if there weren’t enough copies to go around, I probably wouldn’t have.
In this recent interview with Ad Age, legendary art director and ad man George Lois made no bones about his dislike for Esquire’s recent “e-ink” cover, calling it “gimmicky” and “ridiculous”. He also goes on to comment on the state of other magazines like The New Yorker and Ad Age itself, while also suggesting that the younger folks need to get out more and appreciate the finer arts to find inspiration for great ideas.
Apple recently swung its big legal stick at the Victoria School of Business and Technology claiming that the logo infringes their rights and suggests an affiliation with their company and/or products. While that’s currently up for debate, on thing that is clear is that Apple must’ve been chomping at the bit to rid the world of one more piece of crap logo design. Seriously, if it were me, I’d be more than eager to change my logo. To my Canadian friends, if you’re gonna try to align yourself with Apple, might as well do it justice, eh?
Funny thing came down the wire this morning about the findings of a new study by Nielsen revealing that modern gamers are in fact well-adjusted, everyday people like everyone else. Ya think?
Just as videogaming itself has become a fully integrated part of modern society, so has the core gamer. This study puts to rest the outdated image of the awkward and isolated male, and replaces it with a much more accurate and positive picture.
Well, I’m glad we can all move past childish stereotypes and be a part of the big boys club, i.e. be subject to all that great advertising and marketing. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to the basement to PWN N00BZ and write some more WoW fan fiction.
Great new interview with James Cameron, including some insights into his working style and pre-film career, looks back at several of his now classic sci-fi movies and some talk about his upcoming Avatar.
Redbox, my current (and favorite) service for renting DVDs these days, has taken issue with none other than Universal Studios over new conditions proposed that could require redbox delay new releases for 45 days, limit the amount of titles in each machine, and even destroy previously-viewed movies rather than offer them for purchase by customers. So much so that they’ve filed suit against Universal in federal court because we all know what happens when you give Hollywood studios an inch.
Yeah, somebody get Universal on the horn and tell them that it’s a good thing to make money these days, not throw it away.
It wasn’t a surprise, but listening to a voicemail from my mother telling me that her mother, my grandmother, had finally succumbed to her months-long battle with cancer wasn’t any easier to take. Nearly five years after my grandfather passed away in December of 2003, she had found herself ready to move on and join him in the afterlife. The thoughts and feelings I’ve had in the last few days were partially sadness and partially relief, not because of any burden she put upon the family, but because she could now be free of her suffering.
It’s not easy to see someone waste away, and although it allowed those close to her to make their peace or say their goodbyes, it’s still not the preferred way to depart, I think. Now that that stage as come to a close, the family will gather today and be in her presence for the last time as we attend funeral services in her honor.
